  216. This command doesn't actually exist as part of Tcl, but Tcl will
  217. invoke it if it does exist.
  218. If the Tcl interpreter encounters a command name for which there
  219. is not a defined command, then Tcl checks for the existence of
  220. a command named \fBunknown\fR.
  221. If there is no such command, then the interpreter returns an
  222. error.
  223. If the \fBunknown\fR command exists, then it is invoked with
  224. arguments consisting of the fully-substituted name and arguments
  225. for the original non-existent command.
  226. The \fBunknown\fR command typically does things like searching
  227. through library directories for a command procedure with the name
  228. \fIcmdName\fR, or expanding abbreviated command names to full-length,
  229. or automatically executing unknown commands as sub-processes.
  230. In some cases (such as expanding abbreviations) \fBunknown\fR will
  231. change the original command slightly and then (re-)execute it.
  232. The result of the \fBunknown\fR command is used as the result for
  233. the original non-existent command.
